National Navy albums

Several maritime countries were issuing flag books at the end of 19th and during 20th century officially or semi-officially for their navies and merchant marines. The British BR 20 series and the French Album comes to mind immediately, the German Flaggenbuch as well.

There were the important US Navy flag book series too, the Italian Navy flag book series, the Russian and later Soviet flag book series and a few other countries, which issued single Navy flag books, which did not develop into series (Kingdom of Naples, Imperial Austria, Ottoman Turkey, Japan before WWII).

Digital-only editions (2016~)

The new Album will be only available as a digitized edition. From now on, one can’t buy the printed edition anymore. The thing is, you apparently won’t access it after one year.

The price is almost equal to the price of the printed edition, if I remember correctly, and with the printed edition, you can put it in your book-shelve and have it “forever”… I guess the SHOM thinks it is a wise commercial policy, but I wonder how many subscriptions will they actually get? I am afraid that this is a step closer to definitive end of the French Album series. I hope my predictions are wrong.

Each edition was in two volumes; Part I — Flags and Badges, and Part II Arms. There were numerous amendment pages issued after 1932. Until 1958 these had references to the original page or a previous amendment. After 1958 amendment pages have no reference.
