The municipality of Erebango (2,970 inhabitants; 15,300 ha) is located 350 km
north of Porto Alegre.
Erebango was originally one of the five districts
of Getúlio Vargas. In 1979, the rumor spread that Estação Getúlio Vargas sought
municipal emancipation, and would include the districts of Erebango and Ipiranga
do Sul. After confirmation of the rumor, Erebango, as a protest, asked to be
transferred to Erechim. Since none of the districts reached the population
required for emancipation, nothing happened.
State Law No. 8,253 promulgated
on 12 November 1986 prescribed the organization of a plebiscite for the
emancipation of Estação Getúlio Vargas. To calm Erebango and Ipiranga do Sul's
protests, Hélio Musskopf, President of the Commission of Municipal Studies,
proposed the separate emancipation of the three districts; the required
plebiscite was prescribed by State Law No. 8,368 promulgated on 29 September
1987.
The municipality of Erebango was established by State Law No. 8,557
promulgated on 11 April 1998.

The flag and arms of Erebango are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 26
promulgated in 1989. The symbols were designed by Pr Joarez João Dariva; the
commission that validated the designs modified the scroll.
Article 1.
Shield. A Portuguese shield divided in three fields, the upper left or, the
upper right argent, and the lower red.
Field or. Representing the
municipality's main source of income, it features a cog wheel inscribing a mate
calabash and straw, surmounting a mate plant. The symbol represents raw
material, industrialization and products offered to consumers.
Field argent.
On a field argent stands a soybean plant representing the municipality's source
of income.
Red field. The red field, representing the municipality's
historical past, is charged with a cross surmounting two crossed rifles
representing battle fields.
Scroll. Beneath the shield a scroll argent is
inscribed in navy blue the date of creation of the municipality of Erebango (11
April 1988). The shield is surmounted by the municipality's name in navy blue
letters arranged in a semi-circular pattern.
Branches. The shield is
surrounded left by a mate plant and right by a soybean plant, the two green.
Article 2.
The municipal flag keeps the tradition of the municipal
colors, green and white, as follows:
A white rectangle, in size 130 cm x 90
cm, charged in the center with the coat of arms of the municipality and in the
upper right and lower left corners with a green isosceles triangle, of 55 cm in
side and 80 cm in base. White represents peace and union of the people of
Erebango in search of a common future. Green represents the origin of the name
of Erebango (Great Field) in Tupi-Guarani, recalling the first inhabitants of
the area, and also the aspiration of the inhabitants of Erebango to prosperity
in a new era.
