The municipality of Erval Seco (7,715 inhabitants in 2016; 36,389 ha) is 
located 430 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
The municipality is composed of 
the districts of Erval Seco (seat), Arco Íris (est. by Municipal Law No. 11 
promulgated on 18 June 1964), Capivara (est. by Municipal Law No. 795 
promulgated on 20 September 1990), Coronel Finzito (est. by Municipal Law No. 4 
promulgated on 18 June 1964), Fortaleza (est. by Municipal Law No. 839 
promulgated on 10 May 1991), São Bom Jesus (est. by Municipal Law No. 291 
promulgated on 16 September 1974) and Vista Gaúcha (est. by Municipal Law No. 
796 promulgated on 20 September 1996). The district of Dois Irmãos (est. by 
Municipal Law No. 290 promulgated on 30 August 1974) was separated to form the 
municipality of Dois Irmãos das Missões by State Law No. 9,619 promulgated on 20 
March 1992.
Erval Seco was established around 1900. In 1928, the six huts 
forming the settlement were part of the district of Palmeira das Missões. The 
place was named after a blaze had burned down the fields, leaving only dry 
grassland ("erverias secas").
The district of Erval Seco was established by 
Municipal Act No. 165 issued on 6 August 1918. It was transferred from Palmeira 
das Missões by State Law No. 3,696 promulgated on 30 January 1959, which 
established the municipality of Seberi.
The municipality of Erval Seco was 
established by State Law No. 4,673 promulgated on 20 December 1963, separating 
from Seberi, Palmeira das Missões and Tenente Portela.

The flag of Erval Seco is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 2,003 promulgated 
on 30 December 2008.
Article 2.
The municipal flag shall be red, white 
and green in descending order. Red represents the bravery of the colonists who 
first settled the land. White represents harmony and integration of the diverse 
cultures composing our ethno-cultural formation. Green represents hope that 
fosters people to struggle for the progress of the municipality.
Article 
3.
The dates beneath the shield shall be substituted by the full date of 
political and administrative emancipation of the municipality.
Article 4.
The dimensions of the flag shall follow the modular pattern prescribed by 
Municipal Law No. 316 promulgated in 1975.

The flag of Erval Seco was originally 
prescribed by Municipal Law No. 316 promulgated on 29 September 1975.
Article 2.
The flag shall be white, charged in the center with the municipal 
coat of arms, in dimensions 20 units in length on 14 units in width.

The coat of arms of Erval Seco is prescribed 
by Municipal Law No. 238 promulgated on 21 September 1972.
Article 1.
A Portuguese shield composed of three parts. In chief, on a field argent three 
dry herbs ["erveiras secas"], the central higher and surmounting a red 
tractor. The dry herbs argent. In the center, hills surrounding the town, green 
on a field or. In base, on a blue field river Lembedor that crosses the town, 
representing also rivers Guarita and Ugarnatim that surround it, argent.
The 
shield supported dexter by a soybean plant and sinister by a wheat plant, 
symbolizing agriculture in the municipality.
A red scroll inscribed in black 
"1918 - ERVAL SÊCO - 1964". The shield surmounted by a municipal crown, as a 
symbol of autonomy, or with three towers.
