While updating my collection I noticed the flag of
British Columbia has a different crown on the manufactured flag I have. The flag
has a alternative white and red crown on a 1.5m flag in my collection.

I have seen this variant, at tourist-type shops. I think they were made in
China or Taiwan.

There are variations in proportions and in the blue shade (from medium blue to Union Jack blue), and many flags end up with a thin blue "shadow stripe" just above each wavy blue bar. I can see that a white/red crown on the red/white cross might be easier to manufacture (a little) but there's already golden yellow on the sun, so the manufacturer already has 4 colours (5 if you include the black outlines to the sun and the crown).
The reason for the "shadow stripe" is that most of the older
versions of the coat-of-arms show this shading on the shield; many flag
manufacturers have copied it directly.
