The municipality of the village of Mont-Saint-Pierre (155 inhabitants in 2016; 5,150 ha) is located on the southern shore of river Saint-Lawrence, 140 km north-west of Gaspé.

Mont-Saint-Pierre, named for Mt. Saint-Pierre (411 m), was originally known as Rivière-à-Pierre, as mentioned on the maps drawn by Gédéon de Catalogne in 1723 and Pierre Russell in 1861, respectively. Rivière Pierre is listed on the map designed by Joseph Bouchette in 1815.
"Pierre" ("stone") most probably refer to the cliffs, although some believe it refers to surname Peter.
The municipality of the village of Rivière-à-Pierre, established in 1947, was renamed to Mont-Saint-Pierre on 12 February 1986.

The logo features the local landscape. As featured on the logo, Mont-Saint-Pierre is a hotspot for hand-gliders and para-gliders. The only para-gliding and hand-gliding festival in Québec has been organized in Mont-Saint-Pierre since 1978.
