The municipality of Mons-en-Barœul (21,017 inhabitants in 2018; 287 ha) is located just north-east of Lille.
The town is built on a small hill (mont) in the former Barœul forest.

Flag of Mons-en-Barœul

The flag of Mons-en-Barœul (photo), used since 2014, is white with the municipal logo in full colors. The former municipal flag (photo, 2007; photo, 2012) was anise green with the municipal logo in white.

The four fingers of the hand symbolize the Towers of Europe; the hill is the mount that gives its name to Mons, its green color symbolizing nature; the star in the sky evokes Europe.
In the 1960s, at the instigation of the French government, the largest ZUP (Zone à urbaniser en priorité - Urban development zone) north of Paris was built in Mons-en-Barœull. This achievement is largely the work of architect Henri Chomette, also builder of many official buildings in Africa. One of the major elements of the ZUP is the Towers of Europe (photo). The central boiler room of the ZUP, located at the crossroads of Normandie, Villars and Train-de-Loos streets, which supplies hot water and heating to more than five thousand dwellings and collective equipment, was included in the additional inventory of historical monuments in 2001.
