Before 1974 Finchfield was a district of South Staffordshire, but as a result of local government reorganizations, became a suburb of the city of Wolverhampton. Wolverhampton became the administrative centre of the newly formed metropolitan county of West Midlands. Finchfield, located just to the south-west of the larger city, also became part of West Midlands. Finchfield had been nothing more than a small village until the early 1900s when parcels of agricultural land and the gardens and grounds of several manors were sold off for housing. Most of the streets of Finchfield have Arboreal/Plant related names.
Strangely enough, Wolverhampton does not have a registered flag, but its suburb, Finchfield, does.

One of my Black Country town flags, Finchfield, has been officially adopted and registered with the
UK Flag Institute. This is for the village of Finchfield which is just to the west of Wolverhampton.
I should probably say something about the adoption process. After seeing some of my designs in the local newspaper the Finchfield Community Association got in touch with me. I was invited to two of the local schools to talk to the children
about local history and the principles of flag design. The children were then given homework to design flags for Finchfield and to get their families and friends at home involved. The community association then empowered me to take the best visual and thematic ideas and draft them up to the same standard, resulting in several designs that could then be put to a public vote.

"The Finchfield Flag is a community flag proclaiming the unique identity of this district of Wolverhampton (Staffordshire). The goldfinches of the Finchfield Flag represent the birds that helped to give the town its name. They are placed on the left of the flag to show their importance. The yellow colour represents the traditional farmers fields of old and the green represents the modern parks and environment centre, as well as the colours of the local schools. The patterned line represents the agriculture that has been always been important to the town and shows how the past (yellow) and present (green) connect together."
