The Municipality of Maruševec (6,692 inhabitants in 2001, 538 in the village of Maruševec), located about 15 km south-west of Varaždin, is among the largest municipalities in the County by its area.
Željko Heimer, 13 November 2005
The symbols of Maruševec are prescribed by Decision Odluka o opisu i uporabi grba i zastave Općine Maruševec i uvjetima i načinu odobrenja njihove uporabe, adopted on 21 December 2004 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 23 December 2004 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 37.
The symbols are desctibed in the Municipality Statutes Decision Statut Općine Maruševec, adopted on 19 March 2013 and published on 20 March 2013 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 11 (text).
A public competition for the design of municipal symbols was issued, with a prize of 3000 HRK and 15 day for the deadline. (Varaždinske vijesti, 1 November 1995).
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka, and approved by the Ministry of Administration / Central State Office for Administration before 2006.
The flag is described in Article 6 of the Statutes as "of a single green colour, with a ratio of length to width of 2:1, in accorance with the legal
prescriptions. In the centre of the flag, at the crossing point of the
diagonals, is the coat of arms of the Municipality of Maruševec on both sides of the flag, edged with a golden/yellow outline."
On the flags in actual use, however, the coat of arms has either no border (photo) or a white border (photo).

The coat of arms is described in Article 5 of the Statutes as "a triangular, heart-shaped shield with a golden/yellow field charged with a branch of lily of the valley (proper) with two green leaves and five white flowers."
The lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis L.), locally named durdica or durdevak, blossoms in early spring (April) and is, as its name suggests it, connected with St. George Day. The legend states that the place developed around the castle of the same name that was built by a noble women Maruša who allegedly came here from the Czech lands. The first mention of the owner of the castle is one Grgor of Maruševec, who mentioned the place near the St. George's church in 1351.

Table flags of the same basic design are also used (photo).
