Hasekura Rokuemon Tsunenaga (1571-1622) 支倉六右衛門常長 was
a Japanese samurai and retainer of Date Masamune, the daimyo of Sendai.
About 400 years ago in the years 1613 through 1620, Hasekura headed a diplomatic
mission to Vatican in Rome, traveling through New Spain (Mexico)arriving
Acapulco
and departing from Veracruz and visiting various ports in Europe.
On the return trip Hasekura and his companions retraced their route across
New Spain in 1619, sailing from Acapulco for Manila and then sailing north to
Japan
in 1620. He is conventionally considered the first Japanese ambassador in the
Americas and Europe
Hasekura used a ship flag of beige field charged with an official COA consisting
of
a black Buddhist swastika crossed by two black arrows, within a white shield and
surmounted by a yellow crown, on an orange round shaped background with blue
ribbon. Iimage from Wikipedia.
