Zwijndrecht municipality
Population (1 Jan 2003): 45.034; area: 22,77 km². Settlements: Zwijndrecht
(seat), Heerjansdam, Kleine-Lindt.
On 1 Jan 2003 the old municipality of Heerjansdam
became part of Zwijndrecht.
Flag: three equally wide horizontal stripes of yellow and black; on
the black stripe the municipal arms of yellow.
On the occasion of the jubilee of Queen Wilhelmina's 40 years reign,
on 6 Sep 1938, at sunset a parade was held in front of the Palace of the
Dam in Amsterdam, in which all municipalities would participate. Zwijndrecht
didn't have a flag, so the department of Public Works of Zwijndrecht, in
collaboration with their colleagues from Dordrecht designed a flag, fulfilling
the required 1.50 x 2.25 meters. On 7 Aug 1961 written confirmation was
received from the High Council of Nobility, that the Zwijndrecht flag had
been registered.
On 14 Jun 2005 the Mayor and Aldermen advised the municipal council
of Zwijndrecht to retain the old flag and arms of the former municipality
of Zwijndrecht (previous to the merger with Heerjansdam on 1 Jan 2003).
At the same time the coat of arms of the former municipality of Heerjansdam
will be retained as village arms of Heerjansdam.
Confirmed by municipal resolution on 6 Sep 2005.
