It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain yellow field.

Shield Gules, a Maltese cross Argent, surrounded by  two corn cobs Or in flanks, a mitre Argent garnished Gules with scarves of the Same in chief and a boot Or in base. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black capitals  "ESCAPÃES".
Meaning:
The cross is alluding to the Knights Order of St. John, the mitre is an attribute of St. Martin (of Braga?), the local patron saint.
