Northern Bahr el Ghazal was re-established on 22 February 2020. The Northern Bahr el Ghazal flag adopted the same year is white with the state emblem in the center.

The current state emblem, adopted shortly after its re-establishment, depicts a circle outlined in black. Over it, a grey crowned crane is depicted over grass. To the sides, a wreath is seen emerging from a yellow ribbon which reads NORTHERN BAHR EL GHAZAL (in its upper half) and STATE (in its lower half). To the sides connected to the ribbon are two black circles. Above all of this is a yellow ribbon which reads the same in Arabic.

It appears the old flag might have been in the same format as reported by Jaume Olle in 2011: white with the state emblem in the center and name underneath (Northern shortened to N.) The state emblem during this time was a green circle with a grey crowned crane in its center.

Aweil East County was established in 1994 based on Wikipedia; any symbols it may have had during this time were disestablished on 2 October 2015 (establishment of Aweil East State) and re-instated after becoming a county again around 22 February 2020. Currently, it is in Northern Bahr el Ghazal. The flag of Aweil East County is the emblem over white.

It is unclear if the county emblem was first adopted before 2015 (establishment of Aweil East State) or after the state was reduced to a county in 2020. The county emblem has a central circle outlined in black, depicting in its center a giraffe walking over grass as a symbol of the environment. Surrounding this are two green branches for prosperity extending from a yellow ribbon, having in it two sections and two brown circles to its sides. The upper section of the ribbon reads Aweil East County. The emblem is the same as the extinct Aweil East State Flag; the only thing changing being the name on the ribbon.

A desk flag version exists, found in a dual set. It is the emblem placed vertically over white.
