Presentation of Midyat

The municipality of Midyat (105,542 inhabitants in 2012, 60,256 in the town proper; 10,543 ha) is located east of Mardin.

The played-up idea of multiculturalism, unfortunately belongs to the past. All the Yezidis, followers of the Peacock Angel (Tawsi Melek, the most important of the seven Great Angels, considered by the Yezidis of emanations of the Supreme God; presentation), left a long time ago.
Thirty years ago the residents included around 5000 Christians, mainly adherents of the Syriac Orthodox faith (Assyrians), an offshoot of Orthodox Christianity which split from the mainstream in the 6th century. Since then migration to work in northern Europe, combined with the troubles in the south-east, has forced numbers down until there are only about 20 original families still living in the old Christian quarter.

The flag of Midyat (photo) is white with the municipality's emblem. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The emblem was changed in July 2019. The municipality governed by the AKP removed the Yezidi peacock symbol and added a crescent and star and two birds.

The logo was selected among 60 proposals submitted in a public competition. The winner design features the minaret, church and temple, representing the Muslim, Christian and Yezidi religions living together with love and respect under the star. The birds are Midyat and Mardin pigeons.
