MŞÜ was named for Sultan Alp Arslan (1029-107, lit., "Heroic Lion"), the second sultan (1064-1072) of the Seljuk Empire. Alp Arslan defeated the Byzantines at the battle of Manzikert in 1071, which is considered as the beginning of Turkish rule over Anatolia.
