"The Town of Egremont does not have a Town Flag. Currently 320 of the 351 communities in the Commonwealth have a Town flag flying in the Great Hall at the Massachusetts State House. Some local communities in our area have recently sponsored community-wide events to design a town flag. State Senator Downing is then hosting flag presentation ceremony's for these town's at the State House. The Board is inviting any one interesting in submitting proposals for a town flag to do so, either as a group or individual effort. The flag size is 4'x6', will be made of nylon or cotton, will have a sleeve for a pole and be 2-sided."

Town Of Egremont's First Official Flag

In April, Lydia, one of our experienced customer service representatives [at Carrot-Top Industries] worked with Susan Bachelder, secretary of the Egremont Historical Commission, and created a custom town flag for the Great Hall of the Massachusetts State House. The Great Hall is the largest room in the State House and it has flags representing the 351 Massachusetts cities and towns. The Massachusetts Art Commission wanted to complete the collection by the 20th anniversary of the flag display program in June 2014. The Commission contacted the Town of Egremont and eleven other towns without a flag in the Great Hall and encouraged them to submit one. Egremont did not have an official town flag yet, so they had to create one.

Susan spent time researching the history behind the town seal. The seal includes a shield of Lord Egremont after whom the community was named. The colors; red, white and blue, were selected to represent the American flag. The design includes a light blue field at the top representing the blue of the original colors of Egremont England. There are three joined white chevrons: a smaller white chevron in the middle representing Baldwin Hill and the two larger chevrons, to signify North and South Egremont on either side, and the dark blue field at the bottom represents the shield of Massachusetts. Each detail was specifically chosen to highlight the town’s pride in their history and place in our nation based on the classic rules of flag design.

Downing to present Egremont's town flag to State House officials According to Bachelder, Egremont chose to design a flag that the Town could continue to use, rather than a single event banner to simply hang at the State House. Therefore, Egremont’s flag follows the protocols for flag design and is composed of three colors and a minimum number of design elements.

While designing the flag, Bachelder also researched the history behind Egremont’s seal, which was based on the shield of Lord Egremont, after whom the community is named. Egremont’s flag design uses an updated shield, as well as two chevrons, representing North and South Egremont, which are joined by a smaller chevron, representing Baldwin Hill. The flag's colors are a variation of the American flag, with the upper blue holding company with the blue of the original Egremont shield. The lower blue is Legion Blue, the red is held in the seal, and the white mountains of western Massachusetts are represented by the chevrons.
