From the homepage:
"Marlborough, with its enviable location at the intersections of Routes 20 and 495, just minutes away from the Massachusetts Turnpike, and a few miles west of Route 128, is a thriving community with something for everyone. Incorporated as a town in 1660, and as a city in 1890, Marlborough still maintains its community spirit. Explore these pages and learn what Marlborough has to offer to businesses, residents, and tourists alike."Dov Gutterman, 3 December 2002
An explanation of the seal on the city flag, from www.techcareerfinder.com/pages/places2_7.html:
"In 1836, the community [of Marlborough] changed forever, when Samuel Boyd, 'the father of the city,' and his brother opened the first shoe manufacturer business. By 1890, Marlborough had become a major shoe- manufacturing center supplying both soldiers and civilians. In fact, this was such a major part of this community that when they incorporated as a city in 1890, the official seal was a factory, a shoebox, and a pair of boots."Joe McMillan, 3 December 2002
