Mikhail Vladimirovich Revnivtsev (1957-2012)

Russian Centre of Vexillology and Heraldry Flag

Mikhail Revnivtsev was born on 16 December 1957 in Saratov, Russia; He died on 23 December 2012 of leukemia. He was 55 years old.

After receiving his education at the Saratov State Medical Institute, Mikhail was an officer in the medical service of the Russian Air Force between 1981-1998. After leaving the military in 1998 he worked as the Chief of the Office for Organization and Control of the Engel's municipality administration for the region of Saratov.

In the early 1970s Mikhail was one of the developers of a Russian vex-bulletin (The Flag) until it was prohibited by the KGB. In 1975, he was one of the founders of Volga Club of Vexillology.

In 1993, he organized a special "mailing list" for vexillologists of the former USSR using the standard postal system because the Internet was not yet in common use in Russia at that time.

In the 1990s he was founder of the Russian Centre of Vexillology and Heraldry (RCVH), and in the 2000s, he began moderating a Yahoo Russian language e-mail forum called RussoVex.

He took part in designing the coat-of-arms and flag of Engels City, was author of the official description in the regional laws about the coat-of-arms and flag of the Jewish Autonomous Region, and a member of Heraldry Commission of the Region of Saratov.

He published many vexillological essays and articles in both Russian and other vexillological magazines, including Gerboved, The Flag Bulletin, and in the Czech publication Vexillologia, to name a few. In the process he also contributed valuable images and information to our FOTW pages.

Although Mikhail had no personal flag, he liked and used the flag of RCVH, which he designed.

Today, on December 23, 2012, at 18:30 MSK, the prominent Russian vexillologist Mikhail Revnivtsev died of leukemia, his daughter reported. Mikhail was a founding father of the greatest Russian discussion group on vexillology and heraldry - RussoVex. He was also the administrator of several very important websites devoted to the vexillology and heraldry of Russia and some other countries of CIS: including vexillographia and heraldicum.

We have just received the sad news that on 23 December one of the founders of vexillological activity in Russia, Mikhail Revnivtsev has died. He was only 55. I started writing letters to Mikhail in 1993, and sometimes he called me by phone, but unfortunately I never personally met him in real life. May he Rest in peace.

I am very shocked to hear of his passing. He has been a great friend and colleague for so many years. He was one of the main driving forces to bring Russian vexillology to the entire world and his contributions to vexillology will never be forgotten. Even though I did not know Mr. Revnivtsev personally, I like to acknowledge his contribution to the world of flags and his tenacity and skill when doing research on the topics he covered. Mikhail was a founder of the Russian vex-list, and he was involved in the design of some very original flags adopted by many Russian sub-units and municipalities in the last 15 years. He had a great influence on Russian vexillology.

As I read the comments about Mikhail Revnivtsev's life and his work, I'm reminded about how many individuals in the vexillological community make important contributions to the field on almost a daily bases and yet receive little notice or recognition for their efforts and passions - until unfortunately the end. Frankly my personal vexillological interests didn't lie in the field of interest that were Mikhail's passion, and so I was not aware of his work or importance, and obviously I am the poorer because of it. I can only encourage all of us, to reach out and make more efforts to personally meet and communicate with our fellow vexillogists, and if we do, I suspect that all our lives will be richer because of it.
My heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends, it sounds like I missed knowing an interesting, knowledgable, and creative person, someone I would have valued as a friend and colleague.
