Local Council Gedera (also known as Gadera) is situated in
Central District, Rehovot Sub District, 10 km south to Rehovot on road 40. Founded in 1884 as
the first settlement of BILU, a diaspora Zionist group, and got
11'000 inh. Its name is taken from the Bible: Divre ha'Yamim A' 4,23
[1 Chronicles 4:23*]
and Joshua 15:36.
Gedera is Local Council since 1949.
The flag I spotted was white with the seal on a blue device, with
a Hebrew inscription on the device and an English one below the
emblem. Since I only have a black and white emblem, I used it for
the image, but in the flag it is in natural colours. The
municipal emblem was published in the official gazette (Rashumot),
YP 633, 13 November 1958, and is the BILU seal. Sources: author's
own observation, 29 September 2001.

* For many, the phrase "and those that dwelt among plants and hedges" should better be
translated as "and inhabitants of Netaim and Gederah".
Description of the BILU-seal: Mountains of Judah, and beneath
the words of Isaiah 2:3,
"O home of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the Lord", and the words of
the Torah (Num 13:30),
"We should go up it, and possess
it; for we are well able to overcome it". BILU is the
Hebrew abbreviation of the quoted text of Isaiah, "Beith
Ya'akov Lekhu Venelkha".

The upper inscription is: Committee house of BILU company in
Jerusalem TUBA (initials for: "may it built and established
in short time, amen").
Bigger emblem at www.zmora.org.il [retrieved | picture]
and at www.gedera.net [retrieved | English translation].
History of BILU emblems at www.gedera-m.org [retrieved | English translation]
reveals that between 18981907 Gedera used its own emblem with
inscription: "Community of Gedera Colony in Israel Land", as well as an
inscription in German. Inside the emblem there is a vine.
This emblem was designed by Y. M. Pines to reflect the connection
between the biblical Gderot, the Greek Kadron and the Arabic
Katra. This emblem was probably never used on a flag.
