Comments from the online auction catalogue: "James Buchanan: Campaign Flag on Original Stick. 12.75" x 17.5" glazed cotton flag on original 29" long stick with 31 stars in the canton. This exact flag appears as item 265 in Threads, it is one of only four Buchanan flags listed in that reference." (c. 1856?). Words appearing on four of the white stripes of the flag read: "FOR PRESIDENT, JAMES BUCHANAN, FOR VICE PRESIDENT JOHN C. BRECKINRIDGE". Pres. Buchanon served as U.S. president between March 4, 1857 - March 4, 1861. He was followed by Pres. Abraham Lincoln.

A U.S. 1856 presidential-campaign flag for "John C. Fremont -- William L. Dayton" with a portrait of Fremont; 16-1/2" x 27" glazed or polished cotton flag. There are 13 stars in the canton when there were 31 states in 1856.
