After receiving an extremely low ranking of 310th of 312 flags in NAVA's American City Flags Survey of 2022, Overland Park sought to develop a new flag. A contest was held in May and June 2025 and received 141 entries. Over the course of several months, the city engaged with community members and, via branding designer Aubrey Burgess and communications director Meg Ralph, worked with NAVA to receive feedback and refine the submitted designs. During an online NAVA Flag Design Forum, the 10 highest ranked flags and public feedback on them were presented and led to six refined designs being produced. After the six designs received feedback from the community via polling at public facilities, they were further refined by Aubrey Burgess and led to three prototypes of the final flag designs being presented, with an explanation of NAVA’s design principles and cooperation, to the City Council Committee of the Whole by Meg Ralph on August 18. The three designs were presented to the City Council, and the design preferred by the Committee and inspired by a contest entry from city resident Justin Ruggieri was adopted as the new official flag on September 9, 2025.

The features of the flag are a red oak tree, which is in the city’s brand and represents its official city tree, its "Tree City USA" designation, and the park-like community; a chevron, which represents the city’s forward-thinking nature; the color chartreuse, representing revitalization, growth, energy, and innovation; and the color forest green, which represents the city’s history, stability, and natural resources.

The flag of Overland Park is the city logo (OP and tree) in green on a white field. A photo of the flag can be seen at www.opkansas.org.

"Overland Park was incorporated as a first-class city May 20, 1960 with a population of 28,085. The city now has about 162,600 residents, making it the second most populous city in Kansas. Our geographical area includes about 56 square miles of Johnson County, which is located in the Kansas City metropolitan area."

Two shades of green are used on the logo - as it is officially prescribed: Three PMS colors create the full-color version of the logo.

1. The tree's foliage is PMS 356
2. "Overland Park" and "Kansas" are PMS 287
3. "OP," "The City of" and the line are PMS 343

On the flag are used just the tree over OP, in different shades of green.
