Afghanistan Model United Nations (AMUN) aims to build capacity of young
Afghans through simulation of UN Committees among university students and its
purpose is to serve the long-term objectives of building ties among the people
and strengthening checks and balances on government via strengthened civil
society through training and providing opportunities for university students to
learn about and practice the United Nations procedures in the Model United
Nations (MUN) Conference.
It evolved from the Kabul Model United Nations
which was established in Kabul in 2014. The objectives are to bring young female
and male individuals together to discuss global issues and promote diplomacy,
human rights, peace building, and social welfare. Participants include
university students up to the age of 30. They come from four or five Afghanistan
provinces to develop critical thinking and public speaking skills. Pamir
International Model United Nations (PIMUN), a derivative, was established in
October 2016. It was clearly set up with the help of UNAMA (United Nations
Assistance Mission in Afghanistan), which was laid out in UN Security Council
Resolution 1401 (March 2002) whose goal was to support the implementation of
Bonn Agreement (December 2001). Reviewed annually, this mandate has changed over
time to reflect the needs of the country and was extended for another year, on
15 September 2020, by UN Security Council Resolution 2543 (2020) (https://unama.unmissions.org/sites/default/files/resolution_2543_2020_english.pdf),
extending the Mandate until September 17, 2021.

In February 2015, five delegates from Kabul attended the THIMUN Qatar Model
United Nations conference in Doha, Qatar - the first time a delegation from
Afghanistan had attended this prestigious event. The five students were mentored
by international students from around the world and took the conference by
storm.
These five individuals, led by Rahmatullah Hamdard, decided to
bring Model United Nations (MUN) for the first time to Afghanistan with Afghan
youth society because they believed that this project can bring leadership
changes in the life of Afghan youth. So, Rahmatullah and his team submitted a
proposal for support to THIMUN Qatar international organization, TASMUN of
Taipei American school of Taiwan and the John Burroughs’s School in the United
States. Fortunately, they got a strong welcoming hand of support from all of
them. They started the first ever AFMUN (Afghanistan Model United Nations) class
in the Skateistan organization (Afghan Skate School) with 22 students, with 50%
of the students being female.
As these leaders wanted to improve this MUN
project, they decided to register as an Afghan NGO. Fortunately and finally,
they registered the first ever MUN organization in Afghanistan under the name of
Hope for Education and Leadership in Afghanistan (HELA).
