The municipality of Cordilheira Alta (4,53 inhabitants in 2019; 8,377 ha) is located 550 km west of Florianópolis.

Cordilheira Alta was established by Colonizadora Ernesto Bertaso e Cia, a company founded in 1918 in Passo Fundo (Rio Grande do Sul), which acquired Fazenda Campina do Gregório. Plots were designed by land surveyor Wanceslau de Souza Breves, who came to Chapecó in 1921. Another part of the territory, Fazenda Rodeio Bonito, was acquired by Colonizadora Lunardi, from Xaxim. The settlement was established close to the new road connecting Chapecó to Xaxim.
Cordilheira Alta was elevated to a district of Chapecó by State Law No. 881 promulgated on 5 April 1963. The municipality of Cordliheira Alta was established by State Law No. 8,557 promulgated on 30 March 1992, and inaugurated on 1 January 1993.

Horizontally divided green-yellow-red-yellow-green, approximately 5-2-2-2-5, with the municipal arms in the centre on a white disk.
