The municipality of Imbuia (6,241 inhabitants in 2019; 12,189 ha) is located
160 km east of Florianópolis.
The municipality of Imbuia was established
by State Law No. 839 promulgated on 23 August 1962 and inaugurated on 10
September 1962.
The town, originally known as Chapadão do Rio dos Bugres, was
nicknamed Imbuia by the members of the football teams who played there, for the
abundance of imbuia trees.
Imbuia (Ocotea porosa (Nees & Martius)
Barroso), aka the Brazilian, walnut, was proclaimed Santa Catarina's symbol tree
by State Law No. 6,473 promulgated on 3 December 1984.
