The municipality of Salete (7,357 inhabitants in 2010; 17,931 ha) is located
250 km north-west of Florianópolis.
Salete was colonized in 1925 by
German, Italian and Ukrainian immigrants. The district of Ribeirão Grande was
established in 1949 within the municipality of Taió, to be elevated a
municipality renamed to Salete by State Law No. 799 promulgated on 29 December
1961.
Salete is named for Our Lady of La Salette, whose statue was placed in
1943 on Sanctuary Hill near a seminary ruled by the Congregation of the Holy
Spirit.

The flag of Salete is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 155 promulgated on 25
November 1970.
Article 1.
The municipal flag of the municipality of
Salete, symbolizing its people, land and traditions, shall have the following
characteristics.
The municipal flag of the municipality of Salete was
conceived to symbolize the love of Salete people for the land and to foster an
ever more efficient opportunity under the protection of the patron saint, Our
Lady of La Salette.
Its shape is rectangular, of 20 cm in length on 14 cm in
width.
It shall be divided by a diagonal running from the upper hoist, the
upper triangle shall be white, symbolizing peace and tenderness, and the lower
blue, meaning loyalty to the community and the land.
In the center is placed
a pentagonal shield, with a white background; in base, waves representing
Ribeirão Grande, as well as hills and mounts.
In the central part, adjacent,
on the left a green coniferous tree and on the right a brown half cogwheel,
meaning the municipality's main sources of income. In the upper part, a crown
or as a tribute and dedication to the Queen of the Heavens.
