The municipality of Saudades (9,810 inhabitants in 2020; 20,578 ha) is
located 630 km west of Florianópolis and 65 km of Chapecó.
Saudades was
settled in 1931 by colonists of German origin coming from Rio Grande do Sul. The
river and town were named by the early colonists missing their relatives left
behind in the "old colony" without any means of communication.
The district
of Saudades was established in 1950 within the municipality of Chapecó;
transferred in 1954 to São Carlos, it was elevated a municipality by State Law
No. 780 promulgated on 7 December 1961, which was inaugurated on 30 December
1961.

The flag of Saudades is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 28 promulgated on 28
May 1979.
Composed of two horizontal fields, the upper green and the lower
white. In the center a golden yellow lozenge charged with the coat of arms of
the municipality.

The coat of arms of Saudades is prescribed by
Municipal Law No. 27 promulgated on 28 May 1979.
An Iberian shield. In the
upper right and left cantons diagonally displayed checky green and white, in
the lower canton two stylized plows on a yellow field. On the shield's right
side a stylized tobacco plant interlaced with a red scroll. On the shield's
left side a stylized maize plant interlaced with a red scroll. A crown above
the shield, golden yellow and filled in red. On the red scroll the
municipality's name, "SAUDADEs - SC" and on its interlaced part the date of
anniversary of the municipality.
