Eagle, Fish and Lion symbols are in the Eastern flag. Eagle symbolises Trincomalee, fish Batticaloa and lion Amparai. The Eastern Province comprises these three districts.

Adopted in May 2007, the flag is already controversial. According to "The 
Colombo Page", 6 September 2007, "Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, the major 
constituent of the minority community that accounts to 7% of the nearly 20 
million population of the country, says that the new flag designed by the 
recently set up Eastern Province does not represent the Muslim community. The 
Deputy Minister of Supplementary Crops Development Hassan Ali raised the issue 
at the adjournment debate in the House yesterday denying accepting the new flag 
that did not symbolize the Muslim community.[...]"
