The flag of İspir (photo, photo, photo, photo) is white with the municipality's emblem. "T.C." stands for "Türkiye Cumhuriyeti", "Republic of Turkey"; Belediye Başkanlığı" means "Municipality Presidency".
The emblem features the citadel, which was built on a high rock on the
right bank of the river Çoruh (Akampsis) and controlled the fertile
river valley stretching to the southwest. İspir served as an important
strategic point on the road leading from Erzurum northwards to the
Pontic coast. In the 13th-15th centuries, the city, as it seems,never
became the capital of any Muslim ruler.
At present, in the citadel, the mosque of Sultan Melik with a minaret,
which was built in the Seljuk times, presumably, in the 13th century, a
part of the fortification walls, as well as fragments of the apse and
narthex of a church a few dozen meters from the mosque have survived.
This fairly large church (27.7 x 13 m) was much greater than the mosque
standing next door.
