The Town of Waterford has informed me that it does not have a flag.
Valentin Poposki, 1 September 2010
Thanks to Eugene O’Neill Theater Center Chairman George White, the town now
has its own flag. The flag features a silhouette of the town in deep blue
against a white background with the town’s founding date, 1801, in the center.
Five blue stars represent the town’s five villages, and a ribbon bears the words
“Waterford” and “Unity in our Community”. Growing up in an artistic family in
Waterford motivated White to design the banner for the town, he said. “I come
from three generations of artists,” he said. “It’s something I felt the town
should have.” He first created the flag years ago for former First Selectman
Lawrence Bettencourt’s retirement, but only had one or two made. This time,
enough were made to fly at Town Hall and the O’Neill, and to be distributed
elsewhere. White said that in the flag’s design, the map of Waterford is
supposed to suggest a shield. The use of dark shapes against a white background
was inspired by the Rhode Island flag, and the ribbon resembles the one beneath
the Connecticut shield on the state flag. The town plans to have more flags
made, and will then sell them to residents at cost, said First Selectman Thomas
A. Sheridan. “We have an enormous amount of pride in Waterford,” he said.
