El Comite para Reformar y Preservar Las Tierras de la Merced de Chilili was
created in 1973 to reclaim the lands given in 1841 by the Mexican Government.
Although the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo stated that Mexican landowners could
retain or dispose of their lands as they pleased "without their being
subjected...to any contribution, tax, or charge whatever", the State of New
Mexico ended up taking this land in the '30s due to unpaid property tax. The
Chilili Cooperative Association, Inc. ended up gaining this land from the state,
from which the committee formed in the '70s reclaimed the land.

Chilili, identifying itself under the Land Grant of 1841, has a flag and
seal; an image of its flag can be seen at
https://gentleartofwandering.com/wandering-east-of-albuquerque/. According
to
http://www.chilililandgrant.org/index.php/2019/07/24/hello-world, the shape
on the flag shows the borders of the Chilili Land Grant, with the mountains
inside it in green, the eastern lowlands in brown, and the roads of today
outlined in red. The spring of Ojo de Los Casos secures the western border of
the grant and is represented by the clay water pot. The pronghorn on the right
points the way to Antelope Springs. The buffalo secures the eastern border, the
gateway to hunting buffalo on the plains. The eagle watches from the ridges on
the northern border. An image of the church of San Juan Nepomuceno is contained
within a Zia sun symbol. Beside the map on both sides are words in red, reading
"LA MERCED DEL PUEBLO DE CHILILI 1841". The flag and seal are not of Chilili
itself; rather, it is a community flag for the entire land grant, at least those
that chose to identify under it.
