    Luanda is the capital and largest city in Angola, and the country's most populous and important city, primary port and major industrial, cultural and urban centre. It is located on the Atlantic Ocean and is the country's chief seaport and administrative centre. It is the third most populous Portuguese-speaking city in the world, after Sao Paulo and Rio de Janerio in Brazil.

    The first flag of Luanda was a flag with the civil coat of arms centered on a purple background as described in Decree (Portaria) n.º 19409 / October 1, 1962.

    In 1964 the flag of Luanda was changed to follow the traditional Portuguese pattern as described in Decree (Portaria) n.º 20831 / September 30, 1964.  It is a typical Portuguese municipal flag with the coat of arms centered on a yellow and purple gyronny of eight ( indicating city status for the municipality) surmounted by a yellow mural crown.

    The arms and flag are described as follows:

    Armas - Partido, cosido de azul e de vermelho.
    I) A imagem de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, de carnação, com sete estrelas de prata a circundar-lhe a cabeça, toucada e vestida de prata, com manto filetado também de prata;
    II) A imagem do apóstolo S. Paulo, de carnação, apoiando a mão direita em espada de prata e sustentando na mão esquerda um livro de ouro; vestes de verde e manto de púrpura bordado e realçado de ouro.
    Coroa mural de ouro de cinco torres.
    Colar da Ordem Militar da Torre e Espada.
    Listel branco com a designação em caracteres negros: «S. Paulo da Assunção de Luanda».

    Bandeira - Gironada de oito peças de amarelo e púrpura. Cordões e borlas de ouro e púrpura. Lança e haste douradas.
