Presentation of Istočno Novo Sarajevo

The Municipality of Istočno Novo Sarajevo (website) was formed on 28 August 1992, as Srpska Opština Novo Sarajevo (Serbian Municipality of New Sarajevo). After the Dayton Agreements (1995), the name of the municipality was changed to Srpsko Novo Sarajevo (Serbian New Sarajevo); after a Decision of the Constitutional Court issued on 22 December 2004, there was a temporary change of the name to Lukavica, for the name of the place where the municipality center is located. In 2009, the name of the municipality was finaly confirmed as Istočno Novo Sarajevo.
The municipality was created from parts of the pre-war Municipality of Novo Sarajevo.

The coat of arms of Istočno Novo Sarajevo is described in Article 7 of the Municipal Statutes Statut Opštine Istočno Novo Sarajevo (text), adopted on 26 July 2005 by the Municipal Assembly and published in the Town of Istočno Sarajevo official gazette Službene novine grada Istočno Sarajevo, as follows:

The coat of arms of the municipality is in a shield shape, in three colours, that is: red, blue and golden.
The elements composing the coat of arms are:
- the Serbian flag, tricolour. the cross and four letters "S", representing the historical and spiritual roots of the people;
- the recognizable outlines of Mount Trebević located above the Municipality;
- an open book symbolizing the faculties located on the territory of the Municipality.
The use of the coat of arms shall be determined by the Municipal Assembly in a separate Decision.
