30 May 2018University of National and World Economy (UNWE / Университет за национално и световно стопанство - УНСС) is the largest and also the oldest higher educational institution of economics in Bulgaria and Southeastern Europe.
UNWE originates from the Free University of Political and Economic Sciences
(FUPES) established by Order No. 2,155 of 5 July 1920 of the Minister of
National Education. In 1940 (State Gazette, No. 126, 7 June 1940), it was
transformed into State Higher Institute of Finance and Administrative Sciences
(SHIFAS) and then in 1947 it was reorganized as a Faculty of Economic and Social
Studies under Sofia University. The autonomy of the university was restored
under the name Higher Institute of Economics (HIE) by Decree No. 26 (State
Gazette, No. 10, 1 February, 1952). In 1953 it was called Karl Marx Higher
Institute of Economics by Decree No. 89 (State Gazette, No. 23, 20 March 1953).
On 27 April 1990, the Academic Council decided the reorganization of the
university as University of National and World Economy. This was confirmed by
the Decision of the National Assembly for the establishment and transformation
of higher educational institutions (State Gazette, No. 68, 7 July 1995).
UNWE is composed of 8 Faculties (General Economics; Business; Management and
Administration, Finance and Accountancy; Economics and Infrastructure;
International Economics and Politics; Law; Applied Informatics and Statistics),
4 Institutes and 3 Centers.
