Introduction: National Guard of Bahrain (NGB)

The National Guard of Bahrain (NGB) is basically a separate Royal Bahraini Army not in the chain of command of the regular Bahrain Defence Force (BDF) and serves both as a defence force against external threats and a security force for the Ministry of Interior against internal threats. It was established in 1997 through a royal decree by then Emir Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. (source)
The National Guard consists of many non-Bahraini personnel. During the Bahraini Uprising of 2011 many of these were recruited from Pakistan, for example. It became heavily involved in the Bahrain government's violent crackdown on the pro-democracy protesters during that 2011 uprising.

The National Guard shield comprises of the Bahrain Coat of Arms defaced with two crossed sabers or swords and the gold shapes of the main islands of the Bahraini archipelago. The addition of the crown above the National Guard shield indicates it is a "royal" armed force.
