About the Flag

The municipality of São João do Caiuá (6,051 inhabitants in 2013; 30,441 ha) is located 550 km north-west of Curitiba.

The flag and arms of São João do Caiuá were designed by heraldist and vexillologist Reynaldo Valascki.

In compliance with heraldic rules, the municipal flag shall have the official dimensions prescribed for the national flag, 14 units in width on 20 (units in length.
The flag is composed of a larger horizontal rectangle in red color (gules) and a smaller vertical rectangle in white color (argent), in which the coat of arms of the municipality is inserted in the center.
The coat of arms in the center of the flag represents the municipal government. The rectangle that inscribes it symbolizes the town as the seat of the municipality.
The red color (gules) symbolizes the conquest of lands through arduous armed struggles by explorers and settlers, as the fertile lands were inhabited by native people from the Caiuá tribes, who were based in the southwest of the state of São Paulo and south of Mato Grosso. The white color (argent) symbolizes the tranquility that prevails in the territory of the municipality and the peace and respect that reigns in the community of São João.

The coat of arms has the following symbolic interpretation.
The classic Flemish-Iberian shield used to represent the arms of the municipality of São João do Caiuá is of French origin, introduced in the Iberian Peninsula during the struggles against the Moors, and inherited in Brazilian heraldry as evocative of the colonizing race and the main builder of the nation.
The mural crown that surmounts it is a universal symbol of domains; yellow (or) with eight towers, only five of them visible in perspective view, it classifies a 3rd rank town, that is, the seat of a municipality. The red openings (gules), through the meaning of this color in heraldry, are consistent with the attributes of the pioneers, explorers and leaders of the community. On top of the shield and below the mural crown, distinctly at the very center, a yellow (or) fleur-de-lis symbolizes the municipality's patron saint, St. John the Baptist.

The first, blue (azure) quarter symbolizes the rural properties existing in the municipality's territory. It features in the center a white (argent) star that symbolizes the municipality's supreme greatness. The yellow (or) mural crown is the symbol of glory, splendor, greatness, wealth and sovereignty; black (sable) symbolizes prudence, moderation, austerity and firmness.
The second, right (dexter) quarter features small geographic features of the municipal territory, and a native from the Tupi-Guarani tribe Caiuá, who inhabited the fertile lands of the municipality.
The third quarter has a celestial blue field, a color that symbolizes peace, friendship, justice, nobleness, perseverance, zeal, loyalty, recreation and the beauty of the mild sky that covers the municipal territory. A clearer and country man, with an axe down, symbolizes the struggle for ecology, exemplifying to everyone that today's duty is to plant trees and not cut them down, as trees are the greatest sources of health and purity of the rich air we breathe.
The shield is supported left (sinister) by cotton and maize plants, which represent the greatness and resources of the municipality of São João do Caiuá.
