The municipality of Ibirubá (19,310 inhabitants in 2010; 60,746 ha) is
located 300 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Ibirubá was originally known
as Barăo de Săo Jacob, subsequently renamed to General Osório. To prevent
confusion with a municipality of the same name, it was renamed in 1938 to
General Câmara, and eventually, for the very same reason, to Ibirubá.
Ibirubá
was named for a Tupi-Guarani word designing a tree forming forests in Rio Grande
do Sul, "pitangueira do mato" (Myrcia palustris L.), persistent and
ever-growing, like the municipality).
