The municipality of Monte Alegre dos Campos (3,226 inhabitants in 2019;
54,964 ha) is located 150 km north-east of Porto Alegre.
Monte Alegre was
settled in 1820 after the erection of a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Light,
and elevated to a district in 1917 as Villa Esteira.
The tradition recalls
that tropeiro Pedro Zamban was once so warmly welcomed in the place by Valentín
Vieira that he decided to acquire a plot to settle there with his family. During
his subsequent voyages, he used to emphasize the people's hospitality, empathy
and glee ("alegria"), calling the place Monte Alegre.
The municipality of
Monte Alegre dos Campos was established by State Law No. 10,664 promulgated on
28 December 1995, separating from Vacaria. The epithet "dos Campos" (in the
Fields) was added to the municipality's name during the emancipation process.

The description of the flag has to be corrected:
"A rising east-west diagonal, red-white-blue, with the municipal arms in the
centre on a grey disk."
There is no gray disc on flags in actual use,
sometimes a white disc. So:
"A rising east-west diagonal, red-white-blue,
with the municipal arms in the centre, sometimes placed on a white disc."
