Municipality

The municipality of Quevedos (2,710 inhabitants in 2010; 54,336 ha) is located 380 km north-west of Porto Alegre.

Quevedos is named for its first settler, the pioneer José de Quevedo de Macedo (d. 1842), who came here from São Paulo in 1802. In a document dated 1831, Macedo called the place Costa de Toropi. His daughter, Josefa Quevedo, erected on 1820 a "small church", for which the settlement was named Igrejinha, eventually renamed to Quevedos by Decree No. 7,589 issued on 29 November 1938.
The municipality of Quevedos was established by Municipal Law No. 9,589 promulgated on 20 March 1992 and inaugurated on 1 January 1993.

The flag and arms of Quevedos were established by Municipal Law No. 110 promulgated on 28 August 1995.

The flag is charged with the main element of the coat of arms, a representation of the "Quevedos' Small Church", which was most probably erected a few years before 1852.
