The municipality of Santa Clara do Sul (6,603 inhabitants in 2019; 8,675 ha)
is located 140 km north-west of Porto Alegre.
Santa Clara do Sul is named
for Fazenda Santa Clara, established in 1869 by Antônio Fialho de Vargas, who
named the domain for his daughter, Sister Clara de Santa Estanislau da
Congregação de Maria (born Maria Clara Fialho de Vargas).
On 28 May 1895,
during the Federalist Revolution, the colonists led by Colonel José Diel and
Nicolau Klien, defeated Zeca Ferreira's band. Santa Clara was elevated to the
2nd district of Lajeado in 1914. Renamed to Inhuverá (in Tupi-Guarani, "a
shining field") in 1945, Santa Clara retrieved its original name in 1948.
The
municipality of Santa Clara do Sul was established by Municipal Law No. 9,621
promulgated on 20 March 1992.
