Municipality

The municipality of Luiz Alves (12,162 inhabitants in 2014; 26,008 ha) is located 130 km north-west of Florianópolis.

Luiz Alves was founded in August 1877 by 79 Italian immigrants, members of a group of 311 who had landed in Itajaí on 10 November 1877. On 29 November 1877, they reached the site of the new colony, at the confluence of rivers Luís Alves and Serafim. They were joined on 10 December by another 100 Italians.
The colony was named for river Luiz Alves. In his report on Belgian colonization in Santa Catarina, engineer Charles Van Lede, director of the Belgian colony of Ilhota, recalls that his expedition met in 1842 Dr. Luiz Alves, the river's namesake.
The municipality of Luiz Alves was established by State Law No. 348 promulgated on 21 June 1958, separating from Itajaí. For whatever reason, the name of the municipality was altered to Luís Alves in the record of the first Municipal Law promulgated on 9 February 1959. The municipality's genuine name was officially re-established by Municipal Decree No. 49 issued on 3 September 2015. The Decree states that the municipality's name was never altered by the Legislative Assembly of Santa Catarina, the sole body that cold have done it.
