Municipality

The municipality of Paulo Lopes (7,569 inhabitants in 2020; 45,037 ha) is located 60 km south of Florianópolis.

Paulo Lopes was settled in the late 17th century by Azorean families led by Paulo Lopes Falcão, Colonel in the Portuguese Army. Originally known as Olaria (Brickyard), for the local brick and tile workshops, the place was renamed to Paulo Lopes in 1890, when established as a parish.
The municipality of Paulo Lopes was established by Decree-Law No. 798 promulgated on 20 December 1961.

Description of the Flag

The flag of Paulo Lopes is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 184 promulgated on 11 May 1979.

Article 1.
The municipal flag of the municipality of Paulo Lopes has the following heraldic description. Composed of a blue field, charged in the center with the coat of arms of the municipality inscribed in a white lozenge.

Article 2.
The municipal coat of arms established by Law No. 183 promulgated on 18 May 1979 is located in the center of a white lozenge.

Article 3.
The features of the flag shall obey the following dimensions.
I - The shape shall be rectangular in dimensions 1.30 m in length on 90 cm in width.

The coat of arms of Paulo Lopes is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 183 promulgated on 11 May 1979.

Article 1.
The municipal arms of Paulo Lopes have the following description.
Iberian shield. In the upper right canton, on a yellow field the Portuguese coat of arms, in the upper left canton on a green field, a stylized plow, in the lower canton, on a green field two stylized red axes. On the shield's right side, a stylized cassava plant interlaced with scrolls, on the shield's left side, a stylized tobacco plant also interlaced with red scrolls. A yellow mural crown filled in red. The word "Paulo Lopes" on a red scroll inscribed with date "21/12/1961", representing the date of establishment / political emancipation of the municipality.
