Naçao Mestiça was established in 2001 in Manaus (Amazonas) as a reaction to
the traditional division of the Brazilian society according to ethnic origins
(white, black, natives...) and the the demonization and hyphenation of
miscegenation ("afro-ameríndio", "índio-descendente", "afro-descendente", "euro-descendente").
The movement's motto, "Miscegenation unites a Nation" says it all.
Naçao
Mestiça organized its first workshop in 2007 and set up the Mestiço and Caboclo
Month. Upon its request, the Amazonas Legislative Assembly prescribed a Caboclo
Day (24 June) and a Mestiço Day (27 June). The movement organized the 1st
Mestiço Congress on 20 June 2011.
