Bopfingen Coat of Arms

Shield Or, an eagle Sable tongued Gules, upon his breast an inescutcheon, parted per pale of Gules and Azure, charged with an arched handle Or.
Bopfingen was first mentioned as city in 1241. The first seal from 1279 only displayed the Imperial Eagle and the arms in Siebmacher's armourial (1605) show the same pattern. On the 2nd seal from 1283 the eagle is flanked by two stars. The inescutcheon with handle appeared first in 1552 on the eagle's tail and since the 17th century on his breast. On arms this pattern appeared first in 1462. Since 1810 the inescutcheon had been golden with a black handle and three additional attires, in order to symbolise the sovereignty of Württemberg. The current tinctures were fixed in 1955.
