Alzenau Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, in chief a 6-spokes wheel Argent, in base two branches Or in saltire.
Meaning:
Since the early 13th century the influence of the Archbishopric of Mainz increased. Alzenau became a possession of the archbishops in 1395. Although King Ruprecht granted city rights in 1401, the settlement remained a market town. Until 1748 it had been a condominion of the archbishopric and the Landgraviate of Hessen-Kassel. Afterwards it was ruled by the archbishops alone. The wheel is alluding to the archbishopric. The branches are a symbol of appointment for the jury of a vehmic court, which had been in Willmundsheim, as the town was called until the 15th century.
