Alzey Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale; above Sable a demi-lion rampant issuant Or, crowned, armed and tongued Gules; beneath Argent a fiddle Gules in bend.
The fiddle appeared since 1262 on local seals of the sewers of the local Winter kin, furthermore on coins. A secret seal from before 1300 only displays the Palatine lion as symbol of the local rulers. On the court seal from 1478 the lion holds the fiddle by his forepaws. The fiddle is alluding to the bard Volker of Alzey, a local nobleman, who reports the occurences in the Song of the Nibelungs, an epic medieval poem. During the 19th century the city arms displayed the fiddle alone. The current pattern is in use since 1908. The upper half displays a differentiation of the arms of the Palatine Counts of Rhine. Alzey became their seat in the 2nd half of the 12th century and gained city rights in 1277.
