The red cross of the Archbishopric of Trier and the crayfish from the personal arms of Nicolaus Cusanus are taken from the arms of the former Bernkastel County. Nicolaus Cusanus or Nikolaus of Kues had been a German philosopher, theologian, cardinal, mathematician and physicist. He was born 1401 in Kues, today part of Bernkastel-Kues. The quarter with the keys displays the city arms of Wittlich. The chequered shield of the Farther County of Sponheim is taken from the arms of the former Wittlich County and is also part of the city arms of Traben-Trarbach.
