Passau Coat of Arms

Shield Argent a wolf rampant Gules.
The arms show the wolf, taken from the arms of the Bishopric of Passau. From 1460 onwards the wolf is used alone on seals and in the arms of the city. The first time the wolf is mentioned as the arms of the city is older, from 1402. In the Arlberg armorial the arms are shown as they are today. The oldest city seals from 1368 displayed St. Stephen, the patron saint of the local cathedral, and in base an inescutcheon displaying the wolf from the arms of the bishopric. The wolf became the only symbol of the city on the rear of a city seal from 1460 and before in 1402 in the roll of arms of Arlberg, later also in other rolls of arms, oin architectural sculptures, on weapons and in literature. During the 16th centuty the shield was crested by a risen arm of the patron saint, holding a stone, depicted as a gem, being his attribute. In order to distinguish the arms of city and bishopric, in 1605 a blue bend was added, but this addition was removed again very soon.

Flag and banners have never been approved officially. Their colours are traditional. The arms were granted on 21 April 1368 by Duke Albrecht of Österreich and Duke Leopold of Österreich.
