Meaning:
Bürgel means "little castle". Under the protection of the castle in 1134 a Benedictine monastery was founded by Countess Bertha of Groitzsch. The Wettin kin gained the bailiwick over the monastery in 1135. Bürgel was called a town since 1234 and a city since 1307. It was ruled by the reeve (bailiff) of the monastery. The monastery was dissolved in 1526 and its dominions were transformed to a district (German: Amt) of the Electorate of Sachsen. The district was acquired by the Principality of Sachsen-Jena in 1672 and by the Duchy of Sachsen-Gotha-Altenburg in 1691. The arms are based on city seals. The mounted knight is St. George, recognisable by the dragon as his attribute. The oldest known seal was used since 1610. It already displayed the saint, who had been patron of the local monastery. The pattern appeared already in the 14th century on seals of the monastery.
