Eisenberg Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, a castle issuant Or masoned Sable with a central embattled tower flanked by two towers with cone roofs Gules, on top of the shield a helmet Argent crowned Or with scarves of Argent and Azure, crested by a negro´s torso with lips Gules and blindfold Argent.
A settlement developed in the first half of the 12th century, which was walled in 1147 and called Altstadt (= old city/town) in 1274. Beside this city a new town was established, which was called a city already in 1219, ruled by the Margraves of Meißen. A reeve of the margraves ran the administration since 1219, the city council since 1255. Since 1274 a mayor was appointed by the council, who since then also held the local cognisance of both levels. In 1485 the city was acquired by the Electorate of Sachsen. Between 1681 and 1707 the city was capital of the little Duchy of Sachsen-Eisenberg. Afterwards it belonged to the Duchy of Sachsen-Altenburg until 1918. In 1274 a charter was sealed by the city seal. It displayed three towers and a circumscription "Sigellum Burgensium in Eisenberc". Helmet and crest were added to the arms in the 17th century. The negro is taken from the arms of the Marshals of Pappenheim. Eisenberg is seat of Saale-Holzland County.
