The arms show the castle of the Counts of Schauenburg who lived until 1223 at the local castle. In the 14th century the castle was rebuilt and this building still exists. The green colour and the flower are representing the rural character of the municipality. The petals of the flower are representing the five former municipalities: Breitenbach, Elgershausen, Elmshagen, Hoof and Martinhagen.
