Markkleeberg Coat of Arms

Shield parted per pale; at dexter Or a sinister facing lion rampant Sable, armed and tongued Gules; at sinister Azure a lion rampant parted per fess of Or and Argent, tongued Gules.
The area was populated since 250,000 BC and in 1813 the battle of Leipzig was fought on its fields. Around 1900 satellite towns of nearby Leipzig were established, among those had been the rural municipalities of Oetzsch, Gautzsch and Markkleeberg, which were united in 1934 and the new entity gained the status of a city. Since 1950 the biggest agrarian exhibition of the GDR took place in the city. The black lion in the arms is a differentiation of the arms of the Margraviate of Meißen, the parted lion of the imperial territory of Pleißenland.
